Pet emergencies require planning and logistics. There are no vets or medicines in Culebra for emergency care nor is there personnel to handle pet emergencies or illnesses! Pets must be seen by a vet on the mainland. See below for details, contacts and transportation links to assist you in making emergency care arrangements.
PET EMERGENCIES IN CULEBRA
Be prepared for a pet emergency! Please keep this information for future reference!
You will need a plastic carrier or metal crate in which to transport your animal. You can purchase from Walmart, Amazon, Petsmart etc. In some cases, you may be able to borrow one from FCA, but as a pet owner, you’re better off owning your own. Please note that our local airlines both require hard carriers; they do not permit soft-side carriers.
If you have a pet that needs to be sterilized now or requires time-sensitive vet care, please do NOT wait until the next Culebra vet clinic. You can see a vet in Fajardo.

VET EMERGENCIES
There are no vets or medicines in Culebra for emergency care nor is there personnel to handle pet emergencies or illnesses! Pets must be seen by a vet on the mainland. PLEASE do NOT wait until late in the day! The last flights of the day to Ceiba & Isla Grande are often full, so the longer you put off making travel arrangements, the more likely that travel will be very difficult to accomplish. There are NO emergency vet clinics or hospitals in the Fajardo/Ceiba area; only Caguas & San Juan.

FLIGHTS
Be sure to check the airlines website for details on pet travel. There are usually restrictions on the type of carriers, dimensions, weight limits, pet fees, etc. Air Flamenco tends to be a bit more user-friendly for pet emergencies but VAL has more flights to both Ceiba & Isla Grande.

FERRY
For larger animals and when flights are booked, you may need to take the ferry. Schedules are subject to change. Use this website to check schedule and purchase tickets: www.puertoricoferry.com. Make sure you’re looking at Culebra/Ceiba schedules and not for Vieques.

EMERGENCIAS DE MASCOTAS EN CULEBRA
¡Prepárese para una emergencia con su mascota! ¡Conserve esta información para futuras consultas!
Necesitará un transportín de plástico o metálico para transportar a su mascota. Puede comprarlo en Walmart, Amazon, Petsmart, etc. En algunos casos, puede pedir prestado uno a FCA, pero como dueño de mascota, es mejor tener el suyo. Tenga en cuenta que nuestras aerolíneas locales exigen transportines rígidos; no permiten transportines blandos.

EMERGENCIAS VETERINARIAS
En Culebra no hay veterinarios ni medicamentos para emergencias, ni personal para atender emergencias o enfermedades de mascotas. Las mascotas deben ser atendidas por un veterinario en tierra firme. ¡NO espere hasta tarde! Los últimos vuelos del día a Ceiba e Isla Grande suelen estar llenos, así que cuanto más posponga los preparativos del viaje, más difícil será llevarlo a cabo. No hay clínicas veterinarias ni hospitales de emergencia en la zona de Fajardo/Ceiba; solo en Caguas y San Juan.

Generalmente, existen restricciones sobre el tipo de transportín, las dimensiones, los límites de peso, las tarifas por mascota, etc. Air Flamenco suele ser más accesible para emergencias con mascotas, pero VAL tiene más vuelos a Ceiba e Isla Grande.
