From Luna's Foster, Teresa:
Luna was found in a mangrove wooded area in July 2015 after being reported as injured by a Culebra resident. She was known to have been there for at least one week, and survived due to someone (unknown) having provided food and water for her during that time. When she was able to be taken on the Culebra ferry to a veterinarian on the main island of Puerto Rico, the Dr. discovered that both rear legs were broken and would require orthopedic surgery by a specialist. She was positive for Heartworm disease, but otherwise appeared to be in stable condition. She had a strong will to live, evident by her cheerful manner and efforts to walk even with two broken legs! It was decided to do everything possible to give this girl a chance for full recovery and a better life.
Her surgery was performed a week later. She remained hospitalized and boarded at a veterinary clinic in San Juan for 6 weeks so that she wouldn't have to be transported back and forth to Culebra on the ferry for the 3 follow-up doctor visits, as it can be very stressful for animals. She was sterilized at the clinic, and then returned to foster care in Culebra. In October she had her final check-up with the orthopedic surgeon and was given a two thumbs up rating for her great recovery! She then returned to Culebra where she was treated for Heartworm disease in December 2015.
She is now in great condition and ready for a forever home!
Her origin is unknown, but three veterinarians estimate her age to be between 3 and 5 years. She is a very happy dog, always with tail wagging for both humans and other dogs. Her Culebra foster home housed up to 10 other dogs during her stay there, and she never showed aggression toward any of them. She does like to chase cats, so should be placed in a cat-free home where that won't be an issue.
Thank you for helping this sweet girl live out her life in a happy home of her own!
